Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise when she was a child. Her aunt worked the evening shift as a nurse, so she could follow her passion for literature and theatre during the day. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was taught by her mother that the art form could be utilized to promote activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was well-educated and encouraged her to say something by using the arts. Though DuVernay was raised in Compton with her parents, she spent every summer living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. DuVernay's father remembered watching the historic Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. The summers she spent in Alabama's Selma was the inspiration she used to create a documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her high school diploma of Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she earned diplomas in English and African American studies. DuVernay began producing for the broadcast industry while she was in school. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to watch the home of one of the members of the jury and go through their garbage. The jury member was unhappy with the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose that she would switch to the public relations industry. DuVernay was hired right from college to be an intern at the studio that was small. She was promoted to the position and set up her own public relations company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency also created a variety of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
