Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise when she was a child. She was a night nurse to allow her mother the time she required during the days to be able to enjoy writing, theatre and literature. She showed DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay was taught by her the power of art as an effective tool for social change. Her mother, too, was socially conscious and taught that she could express her thoughts through the art of. Though DuVernay lived in Compton with her family, she always spent summers living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. Her father, who was DuVernay's dad, reminisced famous civil rights protest through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would make use of the summers they spent there to help in her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her high school diploma of Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English and African American Studies. While she was in school, DuVernay began to consider producing in broadcast journalism. She began as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was recalled having an assignment to watch the family home, and then looking through the rubbish of one members of the juries. After being disappointed in journalistic work by the assignments she was handed, DuVernay was inspired to start a new career in publicity. DuVernay started her career working as a junior press assistant at a small film studio following her graduation from the college. She was promoted to the position and set up her own public relations company known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. The agency has launched a wide range different lifestyle and promotional networks such as Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
